What’s the best feed for a lawn that’s gone brown because of drought?

Question asked in June

I’ve recently moved into a new property we left our grass a month before cutting as suggested by the developer. But in lots of patches the grass has already dried out lost colour and looks like it’s starting to die. Was wondering if you could suggest a grass seed or product that we could attempt to use at this time of year being summer and so warm? Unless you would advise leaving it and laying new seed later in the year? Any ideas on products you have would be great.

Answer in June

It sounds like there’s a good chance the grass has gone dormant due to the drought, meaning it will most definitely go green again when the weather cools down or it gets a good dose of water. The most important thing in this instance would be to keep it watered during the heat.

Assuming the patches aren’t from Nitrogen scorch and that there hasn’t been anything applied to it in terms of feed by yourself or the developers, then you would be best using one of our ‘droughtsafe’ products (links below) – liquid lawn feed; organic liquid seaweed or granular organic lawn feed

What do you suggest for turf that was laid 2 weeks ago?

Question in June

I recently purchased from you starter fertiliser for my new lawn from turf laid 2 weeks ago which is now ready for its first cut. I would like to purchase in the near future (at the correct time) some fertiliser to keep my grass in good condition, when and what do you suggest?

Great to hear your lawn is doing well and thank you for choosing us. We don’t currently have yearly subscriptions but we do send out seasonal emails as reminders on what to do.

You next application would be our liquid lawn feed every 6-8 weeks during the Summer months. Then you would want to apply our Autumn Lawn Feed in around October/November. Then 10-12 weeks later, apply our Winter Lawn Feed in Jan/Feb.

From there you would apply a Spring/Summer Fertiliser in around March/April and then repeat the liquid feed again next Summer. I always recommend some light overseeding in Spring and Autumn too, just to keep the lawn thick and green, but that’s optional.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards sowing grass seed, it’s not a problem to sow seed when it’s hot but you will need to keep it watered 2-3 times daily and it may take longer to germinate. However, it doesn’t sound like you need to seed the lawn just yet, so I would try with water and a feed first.

Often the soil isn’t very good on newly developed land so you may need to do some soil conditioning later in the year too.
