Our premium shade grass seed is a special mix of grass that creates deeper roots so it can thrive in shade. Either under trees or next to a fence, your lawn will thrive. Create the stripes you dreamed of in an area you thought was impossible.

When and where to sow Premium Shade Grass Seed

Whether overseeding or seeding from scratch, our grass seed should be sown when the soil temperature is above 8-10 degrees and when there is no frost forecast. Shady grass seed needs light, moisture and warm soil to germinate. Note, the soil temperature is always warmer than the temperature in the air. Below are the benefits and precautionary measures to take when sowing at different times of year.

Do sow in Autumn

Autumn is often said to be the best time to sow grass seed because of the warm days and damp evenings/mornings. Typically September to November in the UK can give you the perfect growing conditions needed for germination. However be careful not to get caught out by early frost. If the days are dry, water the seed twice a day to maintain moisture levels.

Weed growth also slows down in the Autumn, giving your new grass seed a much better chance of out competing them.

Do sow in Spring

Spring is one of the best times to get your lawn looking great again and you will often find late February to May in the UK can give you the perfect growing conditions as mentioned above. Be sure not to get caught out by late frost in the Spring.

Spring rain will also help the roots establish themselves quickly.

Do sow in Summer

Long light hours and warm soil in the Summer means our grass seed will germinate well at this time of year. However, if the weather forecast is dry for the upcoming days, you must water the seeds every day so to maintain moisture levels in the soil.

Don’t sow in Winter

If you want the best chances of success, then avoid sowing our grass seed in the Winter (December / January / early Feb). You are battling with too many adverse elements. Such as, leaves moulding on the ground, high chance of frost, cold soil and not much light. All these things mean conditions are too adverse for grass seed to germinate.

In Summary

For best results, you should sow grass seed when the weather is fair – not to hot and not too cold. Don’t sow if frost is forecast. The soil must be above 8 degrees Celsius for the seed to germinate.

Matt has been so helpful when I’ve needed advice on different lawns I’ve worked with; and the products have been brilliant. The shade grass seed is so helpful in a shady part of your lawn. All products I’ve used have been great, and there is so much helpful information on the website. Thank you

  2. Sarah

The challenge was a very difficult area underneath a huge, very old Yew tree with a high brick wall on two sides. North facing. We seeded and after only 4 days we were amazed to see a green haze appear. 2 weeks later the whole area is covered with fresh new grass. Absolutely amazed and delighted with the result!!! Highly recommend this premium shady area seed.

  3. Sarah Griffin

A seemingly impossible scruffy and in shade most of the day area under a huge yew tree was the challenge. We never expected that the seed would germinate so fast! We were amazed to see a green haze appear after only a few days. Incredible! I have been recommending the relentless gardener to everyone for the go to place for advice on lawns and seed. Excellent customer service and products.

  4. Paul K (verified owner)

This seed has worked superbly for me with a nice and fine green lawn from scratch. I’ve struggled in the past to get grass seeds that have germinated for my shady, acidic soil and so was delighted with the results of this. I simply followed the instructions on the website, with the recommended fertiliser and ensured that it was well watered in for a few weeks until established. Seedlings appeared after about a week and a half with a mid-May sowing.

  5. Guest

Good quality seeds, germination was fast and looks great.

  6. Lynn W

I had been searching for some feed that I could use where my pets run, and where the lawn is in the shade. This was the only website who seemed to have something suitable, and they helped guide me to the right products. The website is so easy to use, and they’re quick to respond to emails. My order arrived quickly, and I can’t fault this service.

  7. De

Has mainly worked in deep shade

  8. Ad

This was exactly what I was looking for. My lawn is under huge trees, covered in shade and suffers from wet soil most of the winter. This seed has definitely done the the trick.
